The Red Value System of Spiral Dynamics

What is the theory of Spiral Dynamics?

Spiral Dynamics is a model of the evolution of individuals and societies' value systems (memes). Each has its code and color with a unique set of value orientations and priorities that form its beliefs and values. People and societies dynamically move through these levels depending on the changing conditions of life, experience, and challenges that stand in their way.

Who created Spiral Dynamics?

The beginning was laid by the research of Dr. Clare W. Graves

The term Spiral Dynamics was used by Don Beck and Christopher Cowan in the book «Spiral Dynamics: Mastering Values, Leadership, and Change.»

The red value system focuses on power, self-expression, and individualism in Spiral Dynamics. It is characterized by a strong sense of self, impulsiveness, and a desire for immediate gratification. According to the Spiral Dynamics model, this value system is often associated with warrior cultures and is considered the third level of human development. People in red vMeme are driven by their impulses and desires, tend to be self-centered, focus on their own needs, and are often seen as dominant, assertive, and competitive. They have little concern for rules or laws and are willing to use force to achieve their goals. They tend to be impulsive and act on their desires without considering the consequences.

The Red Value System through the lenses of SDTEST®

SDTEST® has 36 different VUCA polls that calculate the 13,034 correlation values between stages of development according to the theory of Spiral Dynamics and answer options of these 33 polls.

We invite curiosity about the systemic mechanisms behind this correlation. There may be hidden variables that provide alternative explanations.

In our analysis of the poll "What qualities and abilities do good leaders use when building successful teams?" we found an intriguing positive correlation that warrants closer examination:

0.0956 between the Influential and the Red stage.

The critical value of the correlation coefficient for a non-normal distribution, by Spearman r = 0.0018. This positive correlation of 0.0956 meets the reliability criteria but does not necessarily imply causation.

Given the Red vMeme's raw exertion of power and competitiveness, this 0.0956 positive correlation makes intrinsic sense. Those viewing the world through a Red lens aim to establish control and prominence through sheer influential force.

The Red psychology is wired to command respect through bold displays of dominance. They lead via raw magnetism and wielding authority. While such strong-arm influence can achieve goals, it overlooks ethics and the greater good.

In studying this further, we should explore the contexts where Red leaders gain followings versus eventual rebellion. Their impulsiveness and desire for immediate results can inspire action yet also sow seeds of uprising if they ignore prudence and care for people.

We must take care not to assume "might make right" even if the capacity for influence correlates at a vMeme level. Not all expressions of power translate into ethical, sustainable leadership. Discernment is required to channel Red psychology toward positive ends rather than coercion through force of personality.

In our analysis of the poll "I live thinking about my past, present or future," we found an intriguing negative correlation that warrants closer examination:

-0.0944 between the Present and the Red stage.

The critical value of the correlation coefficient for a normal distribution, by William Sealy Gosset (Student) r = 0.0686. This negative correlation -0.0944 meets the reliability criteria but does not necessarily imply causation.

We see the inconsistency between the negative correlation and Red psychology's innate present-focus:

  1. A negative correlation means that as one variable increases, the other decreases. High X aligns with low Y.
  2. Red psychology is wired for immediate sensation and gratification in the heat of the present moment.

So, we see a negative correlation between Red and present-moment focus, which goes against Red's intrinsic nature.

This logical gap provokes important reflection about potential meanings:

  1. Might the negative correlation paradoxically indicate that those already firmly rooted in the present under-report or underestimate that tendency when self-assessing? Interesting self-perception issue.
  2. Are there complex developmental nuances whereby Red expression shifts concerning time perspectives? Expressions of Red manifest differently in past/present/future orientations.

That is an insightful catch! The contradiction deserves deeper investigation to unpack the psychological and methodological implications. Please share any other interpretations that could explain this logical gap. Reconciling theory and data is crucial for coherence.

In our analysis of the poll "Oxford Happiness Survey," we found an intriguing positive correlation that warrants closer examination:

0.1415 between the I have very warm feelings towards almost everyone / Strongly Disagree and the Red stage.

The critical value of the correlation coefficient for a non-normal distribution, by Spearman r = 0.0025. This positive correlation of 0.1415 meets the reliability criteria but does not necessarily imply causation.

This positive correlation of 0.1415 makes intrinsic sense given the Red vMeme's raw exertion of power and self-interest over communal concerns. Those perceiving life through a Red lens are wired as warriors, seeking to dominate adversaries rather than warmly embrace humanity.

The Red worldview arises when trying to break free and assert oneself over suffocating tribes; seeking liberation, Red psychology fractures social constraints to unleash fierce independence. Consideration of others proves secondary amidst the pressing quest for glory, conquest, and satiation of desire.

In our analysis of the poll "Why do people procrastinate?" we found an intriguing positive correlation that warrants closer examination:

0.0928 between the Fear of Failure: Apprehension or anxiety about failing or not meeting expectations, leading to avoidance of tasks / Highly Applicable and the Red stage.

The critical value of the correlation coefficient for a non-normal distribution, by Spearman r = 0.0037. This positive correlation of 0.0928 meets the reliability criteria but does not necessarily imply causation.

This positive correlation of 0.0928 makes sense, given the Red drive for glory and aversion toward shame. Those perceiving life through a Red lens are wired for triumph, conquest, and competitive advantage. The prospect of embarrassment through defeat thus evokes avoidance behaviors rather than courageous persistence in facing daunting odds.

The existential fighter instinct within Red psychology springs from a profound need to establish independence and respect through displays of raw power and daring. Failure risks a crisis of self-worth and regression back into suffocating hierarchies one must transcend at all costs.

And while fear of disgrace may paralyze, some harness it to fuel ruthless preparation.

In our analysis of the poll "The Five Dysfunctions of a Team," we found an intriguing negative correlation that warrants closer examination:

-0.2024 between the Absence of Trust (Without trust, teams cannot function at their optimum. Trust isn't just about believing in skills; it's about vulnerability-based trust) and the Red stage.

The critical value of the correlation coefficient for a normal distribution, by William Sealy Gosset (Student) r = 0.1454. This negative correlation of -0.2024 meets the reliability criteria but does not necessarily imply causation.

This negative correlation of -0.2024 between the absence of trust and the Red value system is understandable. Vulnerability is seen as a weakness in the competitive, impulsive red worldview. Admitting uncertainty or fallibility would undermine the display of strength so critical for dominance.

From a Red perspective, trust opens dangerous possibilities for manipulation or betrayal. It is safer to assume self-interest motivates all players. Maintaining vigilance and leverage prevents others from taking advantage. Control through fear rather than trust is seen as more effective.

Additionally, red exists at the moment, gratifying immediate desires. Carefully building trust happens slowly over time, often deferring impulses for later reward. Red needs more patience for such long-term investments with a guaranteed personal payoff.

In groups, Red wants recognition for individual achievements over collective efforts. Concerns about enabling the team seem secondary to getting credit for one’s own contributions. Cohesion based on vulnerability has little appeal compared to independence.

In sum, this correlation demonstrates Red sees trust as antithetical to self-focused needs for autonomy, dominance, and instant results. The absence of trust serves a purpose in fueling a ruthless drive towards alpha status at any cost. This grants insights into red psychology and group dynamics.

In our analysis of the poll "Are you ready to receive less pay to work remotely?" we found an intriguing positive correlation that warrants closer examination:

0.1118 between the Not Ready and the Red stage.

The critical value of the correlation coefficient for a normal distribution, by William Sealy Gosset (Student) r = 0.0674. This positive correlation of 0.1118 meets the reliability criteria but does not necessarily imply causation.

This positive correlation of 0,1118 aligns with the Red value system's focus on meeting immediate personal needs and desires. In the impulsive, self-oriented red worldview, one's income and material rewards take priority over intangible benefits or ideological causes.

Red is less concerned with the method or location of work than the bottom line of competitive compensation. Other factors like flexibility or social contribution matter less than the raw capability to acquire primary tangible resources. Red wants financial recognition of bold individual efforts.

Additionally, acquiescing to less pay risks exploitation or being seen as weak in the restless quest for supremacy. Red sees concessions to group interests or causes as threatening autonomy and status. Standing firm on income maximization demonstrates Red's fierce independence.

The correlation shows how the Red vMeme closely associates one's monetary worth with perceptions of success and power. The drive for money and the symbolic connotations of victory eclipse remote work options. Red keeps an eye on one primal reward - the highest personal payoff possible.

In our analysis of the poll "Ageism in life," we found an intriguing positive correlation that warrants closer examination:

0.1087 between the Yes, I have been treated differently because of my age and the Red stage.

The critical value of the correlation coefficient for a normal distribution, by William Sealy Gosset (Student) r = 0.0869. This positive correlation of 0.1087 meets the reliability criteria but does not necessarily imply causation.

This positive correlation of 0.1087 makes sense, given the Red focus on power, action, and commanding respect through bold self-expression without hesitation. Rules and norms that constrain Red's willful exertion of individuality would understandably breed backlash.

From a Red view, dynamic prowess and physical vitality deserve admiration regardless of age. Judging capacity based on shiftless categories like youth or seniority seems irrational - merit lies in demonstrable strength and skill. Red smashes hollow barriers obstructing its manifest destiny.

So whether youthful impatience or mature wisdom, those identifying with Red values would resent and rebel against external efforts to limit their ambitions based on ageist assumptions. Red recognizes no artificial expiration date on pursuing alpha status.

Thus, the correlation suggests that those exhibiting a Red orientation often experience discrimination when their age wrongly conveys vulnerability rather than vigor. Their power refuses to atrophy on cue. This external judgment only recharges Red’s determination to overcome imposed indignities through resilient self-reliance.

In the end, for Red, respect cannot be passively earned by counting years. It must be actively seized daily through steely resilience and irreducible life force from beginning to end.

In our analysis of the poll "XING's culture assessment" (Leadership terrible. Imagine a terrible people manager. Which of the following bothers you most about them?), we found an intriguing negative correlation that warrants closer examination:

-0.2032 between the They Steal My Time and the Red stage.

The critical value of the correlation coefficient for a normal distribution, by William Sealy Gosset (Student) r = 0.1647. This negative correlation of -0.2032 meets the reliability criteria but does not necessarily imply causation.

This negative correlation of -0.2032 indicates that those identifying with the Red vMeme are *less likely* to be bothered by a terrible manager stealing their time.

In other words, the more someone resonates with Red values of power and action orientation, the less bothersome they would find a demanding boss taking up their time. They would be less inclined to see time theft by leadership as an intolerable offense.

This aligns with Red's go-getter mindset focused on overcoming obstacles through sheer self-reliant grit. Rather than play victim to unreasonable superiors, Red would tap into personal agency to skirt burdensome barriers from above. Their independence refuses to be relentlessly controlled or drained.

So, Red self-sufficiency corresponds with not rating time theft by terrible managers as deeply troubling. They circumvent restraints through ingenuity and relentlessness. This negative correlation reflects Red's stubborn resilience against all odds.

In our analysis of the poll "The main priorities of job seekers," we found an intriguing negative correlation that warrants closer examination:

-0.0778 between A good relationship with colleagues and the Red stage.

The critical value of the correlation coefficient for a normal distribution, by William Sealy Gosset (Student) r = 0.0647. This negative correlation of -0.0778 meets the reliability criteria but does not necessarily imply causation.

This negative correlation of -0.0778 reveals an interesting dynamic - those operating from the Red value system are less likely to prioritize good relationships with colleagues when job-seeking. This aligns with some of the key traits of Red psychology.

Red is oriented toward power, control, and self-gratification. Red wants to dominate others, not connect with them. Building strong social bonds is not a priority in Red's quest for freedom and conquest. Red values express their strong ego and meet their needs over interpersonal harmony.

In the workplace, Red types are often individualistic and competitive. They focus on their own career advancement over team collaboration. Too much emphasis on group affiliation and colleague approval can constrain Red's assertive nature.

This correlation reveals a potential blind spot that Red should heed. But the ideal approach is harnessing Red's ambition and drive while mitigating its excesses through wisdom. Completely suppressing Red impulses stifles the spark of entrepreneurship and self-actualization. Discernment, not denial, of red is needed.

In our analysis of the poll "Ageism’s causes," we found an intriguing positive correlation that warrants closer examination:

0.1046 between the No, younger people are not respected in our community and the Red stage.

The critical value of the correlation coefficient for a normal distribution, by William Sealy Gosset (Student) r = 0.0928. This positive correlation of 0.1046 meets the reliability criteria but does not necessarily imply causation.

This positive correlation of 0.1046 suggests that communities aligned with the red value system are less likely to respect younger people. Red's focus on power and dominance may lead to disregard for those seen as weaker or less experienced, like youth.

Red's impulsive, self-centered nature can breed impatience with the perceived naivete and dependency of the young. Their warrior ethos values strength and assertiveness, which they may not see in youth.

However, red should be cautious not to underestimate the power and potential of young people. Their energy and fresh perspectives can be a force for innovation and change. Channeled well, youthful impulsiveness can become dynamic leadership.

Lack of respect for any group, including the young, ultimately undermines Red's own power and influence. Wise leaders learn to harness the strengths of all.

In our analysis of the poll "Where would be your next most exciting opportunity?" we found an intriguing positive correlation that warrants closer examination:

0.0921 between the International Market leader and the Red stage.

The critical value of the correlation coefficient for a normal distribution, by William Sealy Gosset (Student) r = 0.0621. This positive correlation of 0.0921 meets the reliability criteria but does not necessarily imply causation.

This positive correlation of 0.0921 aligns with some of the core characteristics associated with the Red vMeme.

The Red value system focuses intensely on power, self-expression, and individualism. Individuals operating primarily from this worldview tend to be driven by their impulses, desires, and a sense of dominance. They are often competitive, assertive, and willing to use force or coercive means to achieve their goals.

In the context of career aspirations, the desire to become an "International Market Leader" could resonate with the Red vMeme's emphasis on power, self-interest, and a desire for immediate gratification. The prospect of leading a global market and wielding influence on an international scale may appeal to the Red vMeme's need for recognition, status, and control.

Furthermore, the competitive and individualistic nature of the Red value system could align with the mindset required to strive for a position of leadership in the global market, where one must assertively navigate and overcome challenges to achieve success.

In our analysis of the poll "Meritocracy" (Are employees evaluated and rewarded based on their performance and contribution to the organization's success rather than their seniority or personal relationships?), we found an intriguing positive correlation that warrants closer examination:

0.1447 between the NO, based on their seniority or personal relationships, and the Red stage.

The critical value of the correlation coefficient for a normal distribution, by William Sealy Gosset (Student) r = 0.1112. This positive correlation of 0.1447 meets the reliability criteria but does not necessarily imply causation.

This positive correlation of 0.1447 exceeds the critical value of 0.1112 and meets the reliability criteria for further examination.

The Red value system is characterized by a strong focus on power, self-expression, individualism, and a desire for immediate gratification. Individuals operating primarily from this worldview tend to be driven by their impulses, desires, and a sense of dominance. They are often competitive, assertive, and willing to use force or coercive means to achieve their goals, with little concern for rules or laws.

In this correlation, the perception that rewards and evaluations are based on seniority or personal relationships rather than meritocratic principles could resonate with the Red vMeme's emphasis on self-interest, power dynamics, and a disregard for established rules or systems.

Individuals at the Red stage may be more inclined to perceive such practices as a reflection of the dominance of those in positions of power or influence, aligning with their worldview of social interactions being driven by assertions of strength, status, and personal gain.

Furthermore, the Red value system's focus on immediate gratification and self-centered tendencies could contribute to a perception that personal relationships or seniority trump objective evaluations of performance and contribution, as these factors are more directly beneficial to one's own interests.

In our analysis of the poll "Factors that impact team effectiveness," we found an intriguing negative correlation that warrants closer examination:

-0.0939 between the Psychological safety and the Red stage.

The critical value of the correlation coefficient for a normal distribution, by William Sealy Gosset (Student) r = 0.0607. This negative correlation of -0.0939 meets the reliability criteria but does not necessarily imply causation.

This negative correlation of -0.0939 exceeds the critical value of 0.0607, meets the reliability criteria for further examination, and could be explained by the Red vMeme's tendencies towards assertiveness, self-interest, and a disregard for interpersonal considerations that may be perceived as hindering personal goals or desires.

The Red value system is characterized by a strong focus on power, self-expression, individualism, and a desire for immediate gratification. Individuals operating primarily from this worldview tend to be driven by their impulses, desires, and a sense of dominance. They are often competitive, assertive, and willing to use force or coercive means to achieve their goals, with little concern for established rules or laws.

Individuals at the Red stage may prioritize more overtly competitive or dominance-oriented dynamics within teams, potentially viewing the concept of "Psychological safety" as a hindrance to their ability to express themselves freely or assert their influence.

The Red value system's impulsiveness and focus on immediate gratification could contribute to a mindset that places less importance on creating a psychologically safe environment, as it may be perceived as a less direct path to achieving personal objectives or satisfying immediate desires.

In our analysis of the poll "Ageism in Career," we found an intriguing positive correlation that warrants closer examination:

0.1405 between the No, the organization does not benefit from having a working group to keep the conversation on ageism, and the Red stage.

The critical value of the correlation coefficient for a normal distribution, by William Sealy Gosset (Student) r = 0.0855. This positive correlation of 0.1405 meets the reliability criteria but does not necessarily imply causation.

This positive correlation of 0.1405 exceeds the critical value of 0.0855, meets the reliability criteria for further examination, and could be explained that individuals at the Red stage may view initiatives aimed at addressing societal or organizational challenges, such as ageism, as less relevant or essential compared to their immediate pursuits of power, self-expression, and personal gratification.

In this correlation, the lack of perceived value in having a working group address ageism could resonate with the Red vMeme's emphasis on individual assertiveness, self-interest, and a potential disregard for collective or systemic issues that may not directly align with personal goals or desires.

Additionally, the Red value system's tendencies towards impulsiveness and a focus on immediate results could contribute to a perception that efforts to address complex issues like ageism through structured working groups may be seen as inefficient or ineffective from their perspective.

In our analysis of the poll "Actions of companies in relation to personnel in the last month (fact, %)," we found an intriguing negative correlation that warrants closer examination:

-0.91 between the Employees for which have not changed anything and the Red stage.

The critical value of the correlation coefficient for a normal distribution, by William Sealy Gosset (Student) r = 0.0902. This negative correlation of -0.91 meets the reliability criteria but does not necessarily imply causation.

This negative correlation of -0.91 suggests an inverse relationship between companies that have not changed anything in their personnel and the Red stage. From the lens of the Red value system, this negative correlation could be interpreted as a reflection of the desire for constant change and disruption and the pursuit of personal gain or advantage.

The Red value system is characterized by disregarding rules, laws, or established norms. Individuals operating within this value system may view a company's decision to maintain the status quo regarding personnel as a sign of complacency or a failure to adapt to changing circumstances, which could threaten their ambitions or desire for growth.

However, it is essential to note that this negative correlation does not necessarily imply a complete rejection of stability or a lack of appreciation for consistency within the Red value system. Instead, it may reflect a more acute sensitivity to perceived opportunities for personal gain or the pursuit of self-interest, which could hinder a lack of change or disruption in the organizational landscape.

In our analysis of the poll "What will you do this week to look after your mental health?" we found an intriguing negative correlation that warrants closer examination:

-0.0788 between the Practice mindfulness and the Red stage.

The critical value of the correlation coefficient for a normal distribution, by William Sealy Gosset (Student) r = 0.0712. This negative correlation of -0.0788 meets the reliability criteria but does not necessarily imply causation.

This negative correlation of -0.0788 suggests an inverse relationship between the intention to practice mindfulness to maintain mental health and individuals operating within the Red stage of value system development. Specifically, those aligned with the Red worldview tend to associate less with mindfulness practices.

The Red worldview values strength, competitiveness, and the ability to act on impulses without restraint. Mindfulness, which involves cultivating present-moment awareness and self-regulation, may be antithetical to the Red value system's emphasis on unbridled self-expression and pursuing power and personal gain.

Furthermore, individuals in the Red stage may view mindfulness practices as overly passive or lacking in the assertiveness and decisiveness that characterize their value system. The notion of quieting the mind and fostering inner peace could hinder their ability to act swiftly and decisively in pursuit of their goals.

However, it is essential to note that this negative correlation does not necessarily imply a complete disregard for mental well-being within the Red value system. Instead, it may reflect a different approach to addressing mental health challenges, aligning more closely with the Red worldview's emphasis on action, self-reliance, and personal empowerment.

From the lens of the Red value system, this correlation reflects the focus on asserting dominance, pursuing personal desires, and prioritizing immediate gratification over long-term contemplative practices.

In our analysis of the poll "Biggest problems facing my country," we found an intriguing negative correlation that warrants closer examination:

-0.1421 between the Climate change and the Red stage.

The critical value of the correlation coefficient for a non-normal distribution, by Spearman r = 0.0021. This negative correlation of -0.1421 meets the reliability criteria but does not necessarily imply causation.

This negative correlation of -0.1421 suggests an inverse relationship between recognizing climate change as one of the country's biggest problems and individuals operating within the Red stage of value system development. Those aligned with the Red worldview tend to associate less with identifying climate change as a pressing issue.

Individuals in the Red stage may perceive climate change as a distant or abstract concern, overshadowed by their more immediate impulses and desires for self-expression and personal gain. The Red worldview values assertiveness, competitiveness, and the ability to act swiftly and decisively to achieve one's goals. This could lead to disregarding or minimizing long-term global issues like climate change.

Furthermore, the Red value system is characterized by disregarding rules, laws, or established norms, which may extend to a dismissal of scientific consensus or international efforts to address climate change. Individuals operating within this value system may view such efforts as attempts to impose external constraints on their personal freedoms and desires.

However, it is essential to note that this negative correlation does not necessarily imply a complete denial or lack of awareness of climate change within the Red value system. Instead, it may reflect a prioritization of personal interests and immediate concerns over long-term, global challenges that may not directly or immediately impact the individual's pursuit of power, self-expression, and immediate gratification.

From the lens of the Red value system, this correlation could be interpreted as a reflection of the focus on personal desires, immediate gratification, and the pursuit of individual power and dominance over external forces or constraints.
